Serena Williams v Lisa Pigato Head to Head

No previous matches have been played between Serena and the 571st-ranked, and 17-year-old Pigato before this.

Serena Coming off Opening Loss in Rome

Playing in her first tournament since her Australian Open semifinal ouster, Serena was expected to do a lot better than her second round defeat in Rome.

Facing Nadia Podoroska at the Italian Open last week, Serena fell 7-6 (6), 7-5 to the Argentine in what was her first match on clay this season. And that’s probably why she has opted to take a wildcard for this competition in Parma.

Serena’s time on clay courts has been rather underwhelming, having played just one match on this surface last season too. It had come in the opening round at Roland-Garros, and following a win there the 23-time Grand Slam winner withdrew from that competition because of injury.

An opening match here against a player ranked that low might not be the best practice for the American but it also gives her a chance to go deeper into the tournament and feature in as many matches as possible. If it’s all about getting into some rhythm before the French Open then a couple of solid results here is all that Serena would need.

Starting with a demolition job of her opponent who wasn’t even born when Serena was lifting her fifth Grand Slam title.

Pigato Comes Through Qualifying Tournament

After getting knocked out of the Italian Open pre-qualifier which prevented her from featuring in the qualifying rounds there, Pigato was a rank outsider to win even one qualifier here in Parma, let alone two.

She went into her opening qualifying match against Leonie Kung at 2/1 to win it, and did so in three but Pigato’s real test came in the second round of qualifiers against Ludmila Samsonova.

Samsonova, who is currently at her career-best ranking of 106th in the world, was 1/12 to clinch a place in the main draw by defeating Pigato. Those odds shortened considerably when Pigato lost the first set but the Italian stormed back to pocket the second set in a tie-breaker before carving out a victory in the third.

Can she now put up bit of a fight against Serena?

Serena v Pigato Prediction and Tip

As matches go, there wouldn’t be one as one-sided on paper as this one but Pigato’s fighting spirit has been on display all through the qualifiers. We could look at the games market for this one.

Tip: Over 17.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
