Caroline Garcia v Anna-Lena Friedsam Head to Head

It’s been nearly five years since Garcia and Friedsam featured in their only previous match. It came on the grass courts of Mallorca and Garcia had carved out a hard-fought win to move into the quarterfinals.

Garcia Gets Past Ormaechea

Coming off a second round loss at the hands of Veronika Kudermetova, Garcia had a potentially straightforward opponent first up here. And while she did face a few issues in her opener against Paula Ormaechea, Garcia came through to round two in straight sets.

Her 6-4, 6-4 win over Ormaechea took an hour and 48 minutes but she was always ahead of the eight-ball.

It started with back to back break of serves for Garcia in the first set to give her a 3-0 lead and while the Frenchwoman lost one of her serves immediately after, she held on after that to win the set.

In the second, the former world number four exchanged breaks of serves in the third and the fourth game, then saved two break-points in the sixth before making a decisive break the very next game. A couple of easy holds later, Garcia had completed the straight-set victory.

She will now look to make it back to back wins for only the third time this season, having earlier reached the round of 16 at both, the Gippsland Trophy and WTA Dubai.

Friedsam Frisks Past Golubic

Having come into the main draw as a qualifier, Friedsam made it to the second round with a gruelling three-set win over Viktorija Golubic. In the process she has now won the opening rounds at WTA competitions for the second time this season, having done that earlier in Stuttgart.

Friedsam was in early trouble when she got broken in the fifth game of the opening set, but three games and three further breaks later, the two were tied at 4-4. Friedsam finally held on and then broke her Swiss opponent to take the first set, and when she won the first game after saving five break-points, it looked like the momentum was truly hers.

Golubic held on, saved break-points of her own, frittered away a chance to serve it out at 6-5 before clinching the tie-breaker 7-1 to level the match.

That, however, was the last of her moments of resistance as Friedsam broke Golubic twice in the final set to finish off the encounter.

She will now have a way more difficult second round opponent and aim to win back to back matches for the first time since March 2020.

Garcia v Friedsam Prediction and Tip

Garcia, at 4/6, sounds like a very good bet given the difference in the quality of the two players. Backing her for a straight-set win too.
