Gauff Stretched Before Getting Past Kanepi
It was a straight-set win in the end but not before Kaia Kanepi had stretched Gauff to two tie-breakers in their first round encounter. And neither were straightforward ones either.
Kanepi had her chances too. In the first set, for instance, she was up a break on two occasions and even served for the set at 5-4 only to be broken by Gauff and taken to the tie-breaker.
And then in the tie-breaker, Gauff was down a set-point at 5-6 before winning three points in a row to pocket the set.
The second set saw Gauff fritter away a 5-1 lead, as Kanepi came back to break the American twice. She then saved five more break-points, before Gauff held to take the set into a tie-breaker.
For the second time in as many sets, Kanepi had a set-point – in fact she had two of them – but Gauff saved both, got herself a match-point and then carved out the win.
This fighting victory should aid Gauff given it comes on the back of a semifinal appearance last week in Rome. She will be filled with confidence coming into her second round match.

Giorgi Struggles Past McHale
It hasn’t been a great start to the season for Giorgi who had fallen to three successive defeats coming into this opening round match against Christina McHale. And when the Italian lost the first set in this opener, it looked like the writing was on the wall for her fourth loss in a row.
This time around, however, Giorgi managed to pull away. An exchange of five service breaks to begin the second set saw her take advantage and pocket the equaliser before it was followed by the world number 83 go 4-2 up, lose her serve and then break back to complete a three-set win.
The match lasted nearly three hours and was Giorgi’s first win on clay since her first round win in Prague last year. Following that, she had lost four successive matches on dirt.
And now she takes on a player who has already taken her first few steps towards greatness by breaking into the top 30. Difficult encounter in the offing for the Italian.
Gauff v Giorgi Prediction and Tip
Gauff can be expected to win this and do that easily, with a straight-set victory most likely for the American.
