Petra Martic v Ludmila Samsonova Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the first round in Adelaide earlier this year, Martic coming from behind to win in three sets.

Martic Continuing Good Form on Italian Soil

Martic is still searching for the form of two years ago, when she won her first, and, to date only senior WTA title, the  Istanbul Cup, and then reached the quarter-finals of the French Open.

That helped establish her as a top thirty player, but prior to last week, she had done little to suggest that she was worthy of that ranking in 2021.

She was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open, and after reaching the  third round of the Melbourne follow-up event, the Phillip Island Trophy, and the second round in Adelaide, she then lost her next four matches on tour.

She would, therefore, have had minimal expectations of herself when she began her campaign in Rome last week. However, she made it all the way to the semi-finals, beating Jessica Pegula on the way, before eventually losing to Karolina Pliskova in three sets.

Buoyed by that victory, she continued her good form with a  straight sets win over the Russian world 89 Varvara Gracheva on Tuesday.

The match began with the pair swapping service breaks, and then Martic took control breaking Gracheva again, and then serving out for the set.

She then underlined her dominance with an early break in the second set,  saved two break points against her, and then broke the Russian once more, wrapping up the win with her second match point.

Russian Qualifier Samsonova Makes Second Round

Samsonova has won four titles on the ITF tour, two of them on Italian soil with one of those being a clay court event.

She began her year by qualifying for the Australian Open, where she went on to reach the second round before losing to Garbine Muguruza.

In Miami, she went one better, coming through the qualifying competition and then beating Kiki Bertens before losing to Maria Sakkari at the third round stage.

She has not enjoyed so much success since switching to clay, making the second round in Charleston, first time round, but then slumping to a first round defeat in the follow-up event.

She then failed to qualify for Rome but, this time in Parma, she made the main draw after emerging victorious from two qualifying matches.

She was given a favourable first round draw against the Italian wildcard Guilia Gatto-Montecone, the world 169, but initially struggled in the first set, being the first to drop her serve, before hitting back with three consecutive breaks of her own.

However, she then stretched away in the second set, and broke the Italian twice more to cruise to what proved to be a straightforward win.

Petra Martic v Ludmila Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Martic is tipped to continue her recent good form on clay against a Russian qualifier, and whom she beat in their one previous meeting earlier this year. Expecting a straight-set win.
