Yulia Putintseva v Rebecca Peterson Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two players and Peterson leads 2-1. On clay, this record reads 1-1 with Peterson having won in the first round of the 2019 French Open while Putintseva responding with a straight-set win in Rome the following year.

Putintseva Falls Away after Solid Clay Start

Putintseva’s best results this year before the start to the clay swing came at the Abu Dhabi Open and Australian Open where she won two successive matches before falling in the third.

Which is why when Putintseva began the clay court competitions by storming into the quarterfinal at the Charleston Open by winning three consecutive matches, it looked like a good showing already.

Unfortunately for her, since that fortunate win over Garbine Muguruza in round three of the Charleston Open after the retirement of her opponent, Putintseva hasn’t been quite the same. She lost to Danka Kovinic there, and that was followed by losses to Johanna Konta and Cori Gauff in opening rounds of Madrid and Rome Open.

And then at Belgrade, the Kazakh registered a fighting three-set win over Kaja Juvan before losing to Ana Konjuh in the second round.

Can she get some rhythm here before starting off her French Open campaign?

Peterson Returns with Belgrade Quarterfinal

Having not played a lot of tennis all season, Peterson warmed up for the clay swing with an appearance on the ITF circuit and reached the last eight in that competition with wins over Xiyu Wang and Anna Kalinskaya.

And then on her return to the WTA tour, having last played a match on it nearly two months ago, Peterson defeated Nina Stojanovic and Ajla Tomljanovic to reach the quarterfinals. There she finally lost to Paula Badosa.

The Swede will now look to start off at the Strasbourg Open with an attempt to emulate her best performance here – it came in the only competition she featured in Strasbourg in 2019 and saw her make the second round.

Can Peterson take advantage of her opponent’s lacklustre form?

Putintseva v Peterson Prediction and Tip

Peterson is a distant second favourite here with bet365 offering 7/4 for her win but we think the match could finish a lot closer than those odds suggest.
