What Happened at the 2022 WTA Strasbourg?

Angelique Kerber won the 2022 Strasbourg Open by defeating Kaja Juvan in three tie-breakers in a match that lasted three hours and 16 minutes. Kerber won 7-6 (5), 6-7 (0), 7-6 (5) to clinch the title, her career’s 14th at the highest level.

Kerber, who was the second seed, carved out wins over Diane Parry, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Magda Linette and Oceane Dodin to make it to the semifinals.

On the other hand, Juvan surprised Elise Mertens and Karolina Pliskova in her lead-up to the title-decider.

The 2021 edition of the WTA Strasbourg Open was won by Barbora Krejcikova. It was her first title at this level and she would go on to lift the French Open crown just two weeks later.

Krejcikova defeated Sorana Cirstea in the final, winning 6-3, 6-3 to lift the trophy, after having gotten past surprise semifinalist Jule Niemeier. Cirstea got past the eighth seeded Magda Linette.

Second seeded Elina Svitolina clinched the 2020 WTA Strasbourg with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Elena Rybakina in the final of the competition.

The Ukrainian player had earlier got a first round bye before she defeated Magda Linette and Jil Teichmann in straight sets and then edged out Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal to enter the decider.

Rybakina continued with her form of 2020 as well but was fortunate not to play a single seeded player all tournament till her meeting with Svitolina in the final.

Dayana Yastremska was the defending champion after she won the 2019 edition of the Strasbourg Open as she overcame Caroline Garcia in a humdinger of a final that went into the third set tie-breaker. This was after the top seeded Ash Barty withdrew from the competition and Yastremska also defeated the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal.

Defending champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova opted out of the tournament as well, while none of the other seeds, Wang Qiang, Sofia Kenin, Zheng Saisai and Zhang Shuai made it past the second round.

In 2018 as well the tournament featured a pretty spectacular line-up, starting with Barty and Gavrilova bagging the top two seeds. The two ladies were accompanied by Pavlyuchenkova, Buzarescu, Dominika Cibulkova, Timea Babos, and Danielle Collins.

As the top seed, Barty moved on to dominate her bracket quite handsomely, reaching the semifinal without dropping a single set. However, she retired in the semis against Pavlyuchenkova, giving her Russian adversary a walkover into the final.

In the opposite bracket, it was Cibulkova and Buzarnescu who stole the show with some quality tennis. The two players were absolutely relentless and soon, they found themselves against each other in the semifinal. Cibulkova, with her superior experience, won the match in three sets.

In the final between Pavlyuchenkova and Cibulkova, it was the Russian who came out as the victor. However, she had to fight hard for three sets, all of which went into a tie-break. In the end, she won the match 6-7(5), 7-6(3), 7-6(8).
