Ruusuvuori Looking to Hit form on Clay
Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori comes to Parma with an 8-7 record in 2021.
The 22-year-old, who is 0-1 on clay this season, has an overall 1-4 record on the surface. However, he did win one of his four Challenger titles on clay.
The Finnish right-hander started the year by reaching the second round of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career. Having won the first round at the U.S. Open last year, Ruusuvuori won his first round match at the Australian Open on his main draw debut in Melbourne, defeating Gael Monfils in a five-set thriller. He however fell in the next round to Pedro Martinez in four.
He had also won the first round matches in Antalya and Melbourne-2 preceding the Australian Open, but lost his second round matches.
Ruusuvuori, who was 6-9 in 2020, which included a run to the semifinals in Nur Sultan, continued the pattern of winning the first round and losing the second in Marseille and Dubai, where he had qualified for the main draw.
The Finn’s best performance came in Miami, where he knocked out the promising Carlos Alcaraz in the first round, the then World No. 7 Alexander Zverev in the second and Mikael Ymer in the third to reach the fourth round of an ATP 1000 for the first time in his career. He was eventually defeated by Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.
On clay, Ruusuvuori was outplayed by Ilya Ivashka in the first round in Munich and then by Roberto Carballes Baena in the first qualifying round in Madrid.
He will be looking to win his first match on dirt on Monday.

Gombos Qualifies as Lucky Loser
Facing Ruusuvuori will be Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos, who enters the main draw as a lucky loser.
Gombos comes to the tournament with a 3-2 record on clay this year, which includes runs to two quarterfinals in Marbella and Munich. Overall the Slovakian is 3-6 in 2021 having gone 0-4 on the hard courts.
The 30-year-old right-hander, who reached the semifinals of the Challenger in Prague earlier this month, won his first qualifying round in Parma after his opponent Max Purcell withdrew from the contest while trailing 1-4 in the first round.
In the second round on Sunday, Gombos went down fighting against Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (8-10), but found his way to the main draw as a lucky loser.
Gombos, who reached the third rounds of the French Open and the Paris Masters last year, has a 9-11 overall record on clay.
The Slovak had beaten Juan Ignacio Londero and Federico Delbonis in the first two rounds in Marbella before falling to Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the quarterfinals.
In Munich, Gombos had reached the main draw as a lucky loser and then defeated Federico Corea in the Round of 16 before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in a last eight match.
Emil Ruusuvuori v Norbert Gombos Prediction and Tip
Although Ruusuvuori is the higher ranked player and has a better record this season, Gombos will hold the edge on clay. The latter has already played in two quarterfinals on clay this season and will be looking for another deep run in Parma. Expect Gombos to start with a win.
