Lorenzo Sonego v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it came at the Montpellier Open played earlier this season. Sonego had won that round of 16 encounter in straight sets.

Sonego at Career-High after Rome

Playing in his home competition last week at the Rome Masters, Sonego reached the semifinal with a stunning slew of wins.

The world number 28, at his career-best ranking at the moment, defeated Gael Monfils, Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev to storm into the semifinal where he took Novak Djokovic to the third set before fading away.

It was Sonego’s first ever semifinal appearance at a Masters 1000 competition and one that helped him regain his career-best ranking.

Earlier this season, Sonego also showed his class on clay by winning his second ATP title and first on this surface at Cagliari. While the opposition wasn’t the strongest – not as tricky as the ones in Rome for sure – Sonego would have taken immense confidence from his performance there.

And now with the Rome showing under his belt, Sonego could well be a name to reckon the rest of this clay swing.

Korda Struggling on Clay This Year

After winning the Quimper Challenger and reaching the quarterfinal at the Miami Masters, Korda was riding a high wave. The clay court season, however, has punctured some of that for the American though.

At Belgrade, in the first tournament which was played here in April, Korda went down to Aljaz Bedene in the first round despite being a 3/5 favourite going into the encounter.

And things got worse in Munich where Daniel Elahi Galan shocked him in straight sets after being a 9/4 to get through. After falling to Arthur Cazaux in the first qualifying round at the Madrid Masters (despite his opponent being 9/2 in the match), Korda finally won his first match of the season in Lyon when he got past Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

A three-set defeat to Lorenzo Musetti followed soon after and while he did win his opener here comfortably, carving out a 6-3, 6-4 result against Andreas Seppi, this will be a very difficult second round encounter for Korda.

Sonego v Korda Prediction and Tip

The directions in which the two players have seen their form deviate, it looks like Sonego should clinch this and do that in straight sets. Backing that prediction here.
