Nishioka Improving on Clay

After making a horrid start to his season on hard court surfaces, Nishioka’s transition during the clay swing has been relieving.

He was 2-7 on hard court surfaces in 2021 before making the second round at the Madrid Masters as a qualifier and then entering the Lyon Open quarterfinal – both competitions that came on clay.

Whether he can continue the same run remains to be seen but he sure had his difficulties getting past a player with odds of 3/1 associated with him at the start of the match. Sam Querrey has been a tough nut to crack at his best but hasn’t been much of form on clay but the Japanese player needed three sets and two hours to get past him.

Nishioka overcame the loss of the first set to register a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory and march into the second round where he will face an even stiffer challenge.

Musetti Continues to Make New Ground

At the start of the 2020 season, Musetti was ranked 364th in the world. Today he has risen to his career-best of 76th, and that has been thanks to the Challenger tournament he won last season but more vitally because of two ATP tournament semifinals he has appeared in this year.

He made it that far at the Acapulco Open where he had begun as a qualifier and then shocked Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sebastian Korda and Aljaz Bedene last week to march into the semifinals in Lyon.

Here, first up, Musetti was stretched to a third set like Nishioka, having to turn the first set deficit into a win. He won 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Gianluca Mager to make the second round.

Musetti, who had failed to qualify for the Australian Open, is on the verge of playing his first ever main draw match at a Grand Slam and a bit of practice wouldn’t do harm.

Nishioka v Musetti Prediction and Tip
