Karolína Plíšková v Donna Vekic Head to Head

There have been three main draw and one qualifying round matches played between Pliskova and Vekic. Vekic had won in their first meeting at the 2012 US Open qualifier while Pliskova then scooped up the next three matches including their most recent meeting in Brisbane in 2019.

No previous match was played on clay.

Pliskova Hopes to Shrug off Rome Horror

There are two ways of looking at a glass, half empty or half full, as they say. And Pliskova will need to look at her Italian Open performance as half full rather than the other way around.

Because while she did reach the final of that competition earlier this month, her defeat to Iga Swiatek in the title-decider would have left her stunned. Not so much because she was a favourite – far from it given she was playing the French Open champion – but because the Czech was double-bagelled in that encounter.

Earlier in the competition, Pliskova had shown signs of recovering from what has been an abysmal season for the world number one, with wins over Anastasija Sevastova, Vera Zvonareva, Jelena Ostapenko and Petra Martic – all players who can make you pay on their day.

Because other than this showing in Rome, Pliskova had won back to back matches in just two of the remaining eight tournaments she had played this season.

Can she now look to go as deep as she did in the 2017 edition where she was a losing semifinalist – her only appearance that late at the French Open.

Vekic Makes a Return after Injury

Vekic last played at the Australian Open where she reached the fourth round with wins over Wang Yafan, Nadia Podoroska and Kaia Kanepi. In the fourth, she was shut down by Jennifer Brady.

Following that, however, the Croat has been missing from action because of a knee injury which led her to undergo a surgery for the same.

Now, nearly three months on not only does she return to court, but Vekic also will be playing her first match on clay since her first round defeat at the French Open last year.

That loss was a part of a three-match losing streak Vekic endured on dirt in 2020 and given the rustiness she might feel here and the fact she is up against a top-10 player, it’s difficult to see how it might not become a fourth loss in a row.

Plíšková v Vekic Prediction and Tip

Pliskova is a whopping favourite here and we expect her to crush her opponent in straight sets in this one. Under 19.5 games too.
