Kiki Bertens v Polona Hercog Head to Head

There have been three previous matches between these two and Hercog has won two of them. This includes a victory at the Italian Open last year on clay, their only previous meeting on this surface.

Bertens’ Not Beaten a Top 100 Player in 2021

Once ranked number four in the world, an injury and the subsequent surgery last season has meant Bertens continues to struggle to get game-time and slide down the charts.

She is now 17th in the world and is yet to defeat a top 100 opponent. Or a top-700 for that matter.

Because Bertens’ only win this year came against a 703rd-ranked player in the first round of the Madrid Open. She has suffered four other defeats, but that’s not the only stunning part.

Bertens is yet to win a set in those losses, having won 17 games spread across those eight sets. She enters this tournament woefully undercooked and with a lot of question-marks hanging on her shoulder.

Can she take inspiration from her best ever Grand Slam showing which came at this very tournament in 2016 as she romped into the semifinal? Or would we see another early exit?

Hercog’s Won Just One Match in 2021 Main Draws

It’s not like Hercog enters this match with too much form emanating from her racquet. Apart from making it to the final of a clay court tournament on the ITF circuit and winning the title after her opponent withdrew from the match, Hercog has barely won anything.

In fact her only main draw win came early in the season at the Gippsland Trophy where she overcame Margarita Gasparyan in the first round. Six opening round defeats have followed Hercog after that victory.

These include four on clay, a surface on which Hercog’s only WTA tournament win came way back in 2019.

The good news for Hercog is she will now go up against a player who has also won just one match. The bad news is that form is temporary and class more permanent, something Bertens is full of.

Bertens v Hercog Prediction and Tip

Another of those matches in which the bookmakers are unable to decide who starts a favourite and we will have to go with Bertens in the hope she will turn things around at some point and what better than to do it against another player struggling for results.
