Cristian Garin v Juan Ignacio Londero Head to Head

Although it will only be the second time that the two meet at the tour level, the South American rivals have met multiple times at the Challenger and qualifying levels and Garin leads the matchup 5-3.

Their only tour-level meeting was on the hard court of Los Cabos in 2019, which Londero won despite losing the first set.

Garin in Decent Touch

World No. 23 Cristian Garin comes to Roland Garros with a 10-8 record in 2021. The Chilean No. 1 has already won a title this year and will look to win his first round match at the French Open for the third successive year.

The 2021 Chile Open champion, Garin reached the second round of the French Open on his debut in 2019 and the Round of 32 in 2020.

A five-time champion on the tour and a runner-up in Sao Paulo in 2019, Garin has an overall record of 53-27 on clay and all of his six finals have been played on dirt, with the Chilean winning in Houston and Munich in 2019; Cordoba and Rio in 2020; and Santiago this year, where he defeated Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis to lift the title.

Overall, Garin has produced decent results this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters on debut and the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters, also on his first attempt.

In Madrid, Garin defeated Fernando Verdasco, Dominik Koepfer and Daniil Medvedev to reach the last eight, before going down to Matteo Berrettini. In Monte-Carlo, the 24-year-old had beaten Felix Auger-Aliassime and John Millman in the first two rounds, before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Round of 32.

Last year, Garin had reached the third round of the Paris major by beating Philip Kohlschreiber and Marc Polmans in the first two rounds, but was stopped from progressing further by Karen Khachanov.

Londero Looking to Overcome Woeful Form

Facing Garin in the first round will be a familiar rival in Juan Ignacio Londero, who has played the Chilean eight times at various levels. However, the Argentine has been in woeful touch this year, having lost all eight of his matches on the tour.

The 27-year-old clay court specialist, who won his only title in Cordoba in 2019, has found the going tough on his preferred surface as well, as he comes to Paris with a 0-6 record on clay.

This will be Londero’s third main draw appearance at Roland Garros. He was extremely impressive on his debut in 2019, reaching the fourth round by beating Nikoloz Basilashvili, Richard Gasquet and Corentin Moutet respectively before going down to Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

Londero also reached the second round in Paris last year, by winning a five-set thriller against compatriot Federico Delbonis, but Marco Cecchinato sent him packing in the second round.

Garin v Ignacio Londero Prediction and Tip

Garin’s produced decent results this year, while Londero has been in miserable form. Expect the Chilean to pile more misery on the Argentine and move to the next round.
