Leylah Fernandez v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Acapulco Open last year where Fernandez defeated Potapova in the quarterfinal in straight sets.

Fernandez at Career-Best But Clay an Issue

18-year-old Fernandez has moved up to 69th on the WTA charts, her career-best and that has been down to her performances on hard court tournaments.

After three second round appearances to kick-start the season, Fernandez went on to lift her first ever WTA title, which came at the Monterrey Open. This followed a brilliant previous season on hard courts too where she had reached the final in Acapulco and a quarterfinal in Monterrey.

The problem for Fernandez begins on clay. Or at least this year, it has.

Other than a second round appearance at Charleston and another in Belgrade, Fernandez has also suffered back to back qualifying defeats in Madrid and Rome. That she wasn’t even able to win a match in either of those two would have come as a jolt.

Fortunately for Fernandez, she is up against someone who has had her own issues on clay.

Potapova’s Won Just One on Clay in 2021

If one thought Fernandez has had her struggles on clay, then Potapova’s been in a worse situation. Starting out in Charleston, the Russian fell in straight sets in her opener and then failed to qualify for both, the Madrid and Italian Open.

Potapova’s only win on clay this year came at the Istanbul Open where she needed three sets and two tie-breakers to edge out Anastasia Pavlyuchenova but a loss in the second round followed soon after.

This comes close on the heels of the last season when Potapova didn’t play on clay.

What Potapova would hope for is a repeat of what Potapova had managed in 2019 when she reached the semifinal in Jurmala. Those were easier opponents she won against; here she is up against the 69th-ranked player.

Fernandez v Potapova Prediction and Tip

This is too close to call given the form of the two players but Potapova, for us, looks like she could have an edge. A three-setter looks likely.
