Davidovich Fokina Looking to Build on Stellar Season

World No. 46 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina heads to his third French Open with a 15-10 record this season.

The 21-year-old Spaniard, who made an impressive U.S. Open debut last year, is 10-6 on clay this year.

Beginning the clay season in Marbella, Davidovich Fokina won against Damir Dzumhur in the first round but fell to Ilya Ivashka in the Round of 16. Quickly putting the disappointment behind, the Spaniard made an impressive run to his first-ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal at Monte-Carlo, as he defeated Alex de Minaur, Matteo Berrettini and Lucas Pouille in the first three rounds before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal.

Tsitsipas was leading 7-5 in the match when the Spaniard had to withdraw with an injury.

Knocked out by Alexander Bublik in the Round of 64 in Barcelona, Davidovich Fokina returned to form in Estoril, defeating Pablo Andujar, Jeremy Chardy and Ugo Humbert en route his first semifinal of the year. However, a place in a maiden final remained elusive as he went down to Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

In his next tournament in Madrid, Davidovich Fokina got past Pierre Hugues-Herbert in the first round, but went down to Daniil Medvedev in a three-set Round of 32 contest.

The World No. 46 continued to impress at the Rome Masters as he demolished Grigor Dimitrov and Cam Norrie after qualifying for the main draw but found the going tough against Novak Djokovic in the Round of 16, going down in straight sets.

At the French Open, the Spaniard lost his first-round match to Jordan Thompson on his debut in 2019. He, however, recorded his first win at the tournament last year, defeating Harold Mayot in straight sets. He was beaten by Andrey Rublev in the next round.

In what has been his best Grand Slam showing so far, Davidovich Fokina reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year. Known for playing breathtaking drop shots, Davidovich Fokina defeated Dennis Novak, Hubert Hurkacz and Cam Norrie before falling to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev in the fourth round.

Kukushkin In Poor Form

Facing Davidovich Fokina in the first round will be Kazkhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin, who is on a six-match losing streak, which includes four first qualifying round defeats.

The 33-year-old Kazakh, who reached a career-high ranking of 39 in 2019, will be playing in his 10th French Open, but he has never gone past the second round, having been there on five occasions, including in 2020.

Kukushkin, who has reached four ATP finals in his career, won his only title at St. Petersburg in 2010. His most recent final appearance was in Marseille in 2019, where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The Kazakh has a 36-60 career record on clay and is 2-6 overall in 2021. His two wins came against Juan Ignacio Londero at Melbourne-2 and against Britain’s Jack Draper at the Miami Open. Kukushkin had taken the first set against Draper when the Briton retired with an injury.

The Kazakh, who lost his first round match in Marbella, faced defeat in the first qualifying rounds in Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Geneva.
