World No. 11 Roberto Bautista Agut, of Spain, got off to a good start on Sunday as he eliminated qualifier Mario Vilella Martinez in straight sets.

The Spaniard needed an hour and 58 minutes for a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over his compatriot, who struck seven aces and hit 35 winners against Bautista Agut’s two aces and 20 winners. However, the 11th seed had better control throughout the match as he made just 10 unforced error’s to Martinez’s 47.

Broken just once in the match, Bautista Agut converted five of 10 break points to keep his perfect first-round record at Roland Garrod intact. Sunday’s win was his ninth consecutive first-round win at the Paris major.

The 33-year-old Spaniard, who has won nine ATP titles, played in the Wimbledon semifinals in 2019 and the Australian Open quarterfinals the same year. His best French Open performances came in 2016 and 2017, when he reached the fourth rounds.

Sunday’s win improved the Spaniard to 19-12 in 2021 and 7-4 on clay. Bautista Agut was brilliant in the earlier part of the season, reaching the finals in Montpellier and Doha but finishing runner-up to David Goffin and Nikoloz Basilashvili respectively.

He also reached the semifinals of the Miami Open by beating Daniil Medvedev in the last eight. He will be hoping for another solid display in the second round.

Laaksonen Sends Hanfmann Packing

Facing Bautista Agut in the second round will be Henri Laaksonen, who knocked out World No. 93 Yannick Hanfmann of Germany in the first round on Sunday.

The Finnish-born Swiss player, who had come through the qualifiers needed two hours and 13 minutes to beat the German 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Laaksonen struck 10 aces and 38 winners and made just 23 unforced errors. IN comparison, Hanfmann had 23winners and 31 unforced errors.

Ranked 150th in the world, Laaksonen had beaten Luca Van Aasche, Juan Pablo Varillas and Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the three qualifying rounds. His last qualifying round against Cerundolo was a real close one, with the Swiss player winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

The win over Hanfmann on Sunday was Laaksonen’s first main draw win of the season as he had come in with a 0-4 record in 2021.

This is Laaksonen’s third French Open and it is only the second time that he has won his first-round match.

Although Laaksonen has got into a good rhythm he will be up against a formidable opponent in the second round. Expect a good showing from Laaksonen, but Bautista Agut shouldn’t have much trouble in moving to the next round.
