Petra Kvitova v Elena Vesnina Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players and both were won by Kvitova. Kvitova’s first win over Vesnina came on the clay of Madrid Open in 2016 and she then registered another straight-set win at the St. Petersburg Open in 2018.

Kvitova Nearly Greeted with a Shock

When you go into the match as 1/20 favourite to win it and find yourself down a match-point in the second set, things have surely not gone your way.

That’s how Kvitova started off her campaign at this year’s French Open as she lost the first set in a tie-breaker and then found herself at the receiving end of a match-point while serving at 5-6 in the second.

Kvitova saved it, and then held on to her serve to level the set at 6-6 before clinching it in a tie-breaker. And with her opponent Greet Minnen’s spirit fading away, the world number 12 then broke her twice early in the third set to finish it off in a hurry.

The entire match, however, wasn’t done that quickly with Kvitova needing two hours and 20 minutes to notch up the win. Can she now shrug off this performance as an aberration and try and get back to her best.

To be honest, Kvitova’s form on clay hasn’t been the best on clay with only a quarterfinal in Madrid to boast of.

Vesnina Wins Maiden Match in Three Years

The last time Vesnina won a match was on the clay court of the Italian Open in 2018. She lost to Venus Williams in the second round there and was then knocked out in the first at Roland-Garros before opting to take a break from the sport as she went on a maternity leave.

Her return earlier this season saw her play in the first round in Madrid and a qualifier at Rome but she lost both in straight sets.

Which is why coming into her first round match against Olga Govortsova, another player struggling to make it count, Vesnina was even in the same ball-park of odds – she was 10/11 to her opponent’s 5/6.

What happened in the match, therefore was nothing short of stunning.

Not only did Vesnina win her opening round match, a first since May 2018, she also dropped just one game in her victory.

In exactly one hour, Vesnina drilled home six breaks while facing just one break-point to win 6-1, 6-0. Can she now push Kvitova, having not done that before in their two previous meetings?

Kvitova v Vesnina Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova’s form on clay and her performance in the first round doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence we still think it should be enough to register a straight-set win.

Tip: Kvitova to win in straight sets: 3/10 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
