Alejandro Davidovich Fokina v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head

This is going to be a first meeting between the 21-year-old Davidovich Fokina and the 25-year-old Van de Zandschulp.

For the second consecutive year, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the second round at Roland Garros after winning his opening round match in straight sets.

The Spaniard needed just an hour and 57 minutes to dispatch Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

The 21-year-old served eight aces, struck 35 winners and made 34 unforced errors in the match. He also broke Kukushkin’s serve six times, while got broken on two occasions.

Ranked 46th in the world, Davidovich Fokina improved to 16-10 overall and 11-6 on clay this year.

The Spaniard, who reached the fourth round on his U.S. Open debut last year, was impressive at the Monte-Carlo Masters this year, as he reached his first ATP 1000 quarterfinal by defeating Alex de Minaur, Matteo Berrettini and Lucas Pouille in the first three rounds. He eventually lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas, having to retire with an injury while trailing the Greek 5-7.

Davidovich Fokina also reached the semifinals of the Estoril Open, but couldn’t make the final after being halted by eventual champion Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Van de Zandschulp Stuns Hurkacz

Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp overcame a two-sets-to-love deficit to upset 19th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the first round of the French Open on Sunday.

The World No. 154, who lost the first two sets in tie-breaks, made a remarkable comeback to win his first Grand Slam match 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

The 25-year-old, who came through the qualifiers, struck 55 winners and won a staggering 169 points in the match. He also made just 35 unforced errors compared to Hurkacz’s 62.

Van de Zandschulp also served well throughout the match, winning 73% on first serve and 64% of second serve points. He also won 34 of 44 net points and converted 7 of 14 break points while saving 6 of 8.

In the qualifiers, Van de Zandschulp had defeated Leonardo Mayer 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round; Manuel Guinard 6-3, 6-2 in the second round and Illya Marchenko 6-1, 6-2 in the third to enter the main draw of a Grand Slam for only the second time in his career.

His first was at Melbourne earlier this year, where he lost his Round of 128 match to Carlos Alcaraz.

After Sunday’s win, Van de Zandschulp is 4-3 in 2021. He began the season by winning three matches at Melbourne-1 and reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament before going down to Karen Khachanov.

Having got his first top 20 win, Van de Zandschulp will take in a lot of confidence into the second round, which will make this a fascinating contest. However, the much higher ranked Davidovich Fokina will still be the favourite to advance to the Round 32.
