Keys Made to Work by French Wildcard

Keys has a good record in Paris. She made the semi-finals here in 2018, the quarter-finals the following year, and has twice also reached the fourth round here.

But she was made to work hard, at least in the first two sets, to beat the local favourite and wildcard, Océane Dodin, the world 115, in their first round match on Sunday night.

Keys began well, breaking Dodin in her opening service game, A sequence of four games then went against serve but, at the end of that run, Keys still maintained her advantage and was able to claim the set.

Much to the delight of the home fans, it was Dodin who forced the first break of the second set. Keys fought back immediately, but promptly dropped her own serve once more, and this time it was the turn of the wildcard to serve out.

However, hopes of an upset were dashed when Dodin dropped her opening two service games of the final set.

Keys saved one break point against her own serve, but was untroubled for the rest of the match.

Canadian Teenager Fernandez Makes Confident Start

Fernandez reached the third round in Paris, in her debut senior season last year, and she will be hopeful of matching that achievement after making a confident start to her campaign on Sunday.

Drawn against the Russian Anastasia Potapova, the world 78, she brushed aside the challenge of the 20 year-old in a  match that lasted barely an hour.

After the pair had won their opening service games, Fernandez broke the Russian and then underlined her advantage by breaking her again, From there she served out for the set without any undue alarms.

Potapova held her opening service game of the second set but only after saving three break points, and the writing was clearly on the wall. She did not win another game in the match, suffering three more service breaks and never once threatening the Canadian’s serve.

Keys v Fernandez Prediction and Tip

This is  tough match to call. Keys has all the experience on her side, but she may need that to defeat the Canadian teenager who is in confident mood in Paris.
