Confident Start by Pella After Poor Clay Run

Argentine Guido Pella has had a poor run since the Covid-19 pandemic with a mix of injuries, poor form and early losses.

Pella who is typically comfortable on the slower surfaces featured in most of the pre- Roland Garros clay court tournaments but did not get any momentum or rhythm going and came into the French Open with little confidence on a surface he has typically done well on.

Once ranked as high as number 20 in the world, his ranking has fallen to world number 84 now.

However, Pella put up a good show in his opener against young Colombian Daniel Galan winning in straight sets. Although he was pushed by Galan in the last two sets, it was good match play by Pella who prevailed and will go into the next round more confident than when

Giron Lucky To Be in Second Round

American Marcos Giron was down and out in his opener against former world number three Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov after losing the first two sets and facing three set points down 1-5.

However, a Dimitrov injury saw him get treatment and not manage to close the set which he eventually lost 5-7.  Despite more treatment, the Bulgarian was unable to get his game or movement goin and withdrew at 0-3 down in the fourth.

As the American said after the match, it was lucky for him and very unfortunate for Dimitrov that he was now in the round of 64.

Giron did not have the best of clay build-ups to the French Open, but did register a win against Pablo Andujar in Madrid who since has been in good touch on the clay himself.

The American has not been past the second round of a major and will hope to improve on that this time around.

Pella v Giron Prediction and Tip

While the American is no mug with the racket, he will consider himself very lucky to have come through the opener.  Pella has not been in the best of form coming into the Open but looked good in the opener and is well suited to the slower surface.

Expect Giron to push the Argentine, but Pella should prevail in a four- setter.
