Jannik Sinner v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

Their only meeting at the highest level came at the 2020 Montpellier Open where Ymer won in straight sets to make round two.

Sinner Drops a Set to Mager

After getting stretched to five sets by Pierre Hugues Herbert in the first round, Sinner needed a further four more against Gianluca Mager to seal his third round berth.

Sinner won 6-1, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 21 minutes to advance to the third round, inching closer to his career-best of quarterfinal that had come last season.

It was Sinner’s solid returning (41 points won to his opponent’s 25) and reduced unforced errors (22 to 38) that helped Sinner come through. Two breaks in the first set and a late, solitary one in the second set was enough for the Italian to win the first two sets but a surprising fall in the third as he failed to break Mager back meant Sinner had to face a fourth set.

In the fourth, there was an early exchange of service breaks before Sinner went 4-1 ahead and completed his ninth victory of the season on clay. Can he add one more to make the second week?

Ymer Much Improved in 2021

Till before the start of this season, Ymer had won just one main draw match at a Grand Slam.

This year, the Swede has already sealed the third round at Grand Slams on two successive occasions, having also made it that far at the Australian Open and is beginning to show the kind of promise he has been tipped to over the years.

His second round win here came at the expense of local favourite Gael Monfils, who looked to have overcome a first set bagel rather well to level the encounter.

Ymer, however, broke Monfils four times across the last two sets to claim a four-set win following a five-set upset of Roberto Carballes Baena in his opener.

Whether Ymer can register his career-best fourth round appearance depends majorly on how much of an advantage can he take of Sinner’s lack of intensity that has been on display in the first two rounds. Else, he could well be a goner in straight sets.

Sinner v Ymer Prediction and Tip

While we think Sinner should still win this, Ymer could help himself to a set here as his Italian can be expected to slip up a tad at times.
