Victoria Azarenka v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

They have met six times before and Azarenka has dominated this matchup, having a 5-1 lead over Pavlyuchenkova.

The only time Azarenka lost was in Cincinnati in 2015. The Belarusian had taken the first set 6-1, but was down 0-3 in the second when she had to retire.

So, Pavlyuchenkova is yet to win a completed match against Azarenka, who won in Miami in 2009 and 2011; in Rome 2011; in Madrid 2013; and in Monterrey 2019.  Only two of those five wins came in the third set.

Azarenka Routs Keys

Former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka trounced World No. 24 Madison Keys 6-2, 6-2 to reach the second week at Roland Garros for the first time since 2013.

The 31-year-old Belarusian converted 5 of 11 break points and saved 1 of 2 to oust the American in an hour and 10 minutes on Friday.

Ranked No. 16 in the world, Azarenka has not reached the fourth round of the Paris major since reaching the semifinals in 2013 (her best ever showing at Roland Garros so far). A two-time Australian Open champion, Azarenka reached her third U.S. Open final last year, but finished runner-up once again, this time to Naomi Osaka.

This year, the Belarusian began her French Open campaign with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the first round on Sunday and followed that with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the next round.

Azarenka improved to 9-2 in 2021 following Friday’s win. The 31-year-old’s best performance this year came at the Qatar Open where she reached the semifinals by beating Elina Svitolina in the last eight, but had to withdraw with a back injury before the final four matchup with Garbine Muguruza.

Pavlyuchenkova Upsets Third Seed Sabalenka

Facing Azarenka in the fourth round will be Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who stunned third seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus in the third round on Friday.

The 31st seed Russian needed an hour and 40 minutes to win 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 and proceed to the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time since 2011. In fact that was the only time she had won a third round match at Roland Garros. She went on to reach the quarterfinals that year before bowing our to eventual finalist Francesca Schiavone.

Pavlyuchenkova had begun her 2021 campaign with a 6-4, 6-0 win against America’s Christina McHale. She didn’t face much trouble in her second round either, hustling past Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 6-3.

Against Sabalenka on Friday, the 29-year-old Russian converted 5 of 10 break points in the match and saved 4 of 7. She also struck 22 winners and made just 16 unforced errors compared to her opponent’s 41 winners and 39 unforced errors. The Belarusian’s defeat means the top three seeds are now out of the tournament, with Ash Barty retiring and Naomi Osaka pulling out of the tournament earlier. Fourth seed Sofia Kenin is now the highest seed left in women’s singles.

A 12-time winner on the tour, Pavlyuchenkova came to Paris with a 9-9 record, having reached the semifinals in Madrid last month.

She has reached six major quarterfinals in her career but is yet to make it to the semifinals.

Azarenka v Pavlyuchenkova Prediction and Tip

Given Azarenka’s dominance over Pavlyuchenkova and her recent form, the Belarusian should be the favourite to advance to the quarterfinals for the fourth time in Paris.
