Vekic Eyes More Success in Nottingham

2017 Nottingham Open champion Donna Vekic will begin her 2021 campaign on Tuesday.

The third seed Croatian, who has barely played this year due to a right knee surgery following the Australian Open, has a 3-4 record this year.

The 24-year-old began the season by exiting the Abu Dhabi Open and the Yarra Valley Classic without winning a match, before reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career. The Round-of-16 defeat to Jennifer Brady in Melbourne was followed by a long break before Vekic made a come back at the French Open last week.

However, the Croatian made a first round exit in Paris, losing 7-5, 6-4 to Karolina Pliskova.

Vekic has played in eight WTA finals, winning the Malaysian Open in 2014 and the Nottingham Open in 2017. She won the title in 2017 by beating Johanna Konta in a dramatic three-set final, which saw Vekic fight back after losing the first set.

Vekic also reached the final in Nottingham in the last edition in 2019, but this time finished second best after losing to Caroline Garcia in three.

She also enjoyed a good run in the tournament in 2018, reaching the semifinals before being beaten by Konta.

The Croatian, who has won 61% of her matches on grass, also featured in the final in Birmingham in 2013. She will be hoping to make another deep run in the tournament where she has produced some of her best results.

Kung Eases Into the Second Round

Vekic, who received a first-round bye, will begin her campaign against Switzerland’s Leonie Kung, who reached the second round after easing past Britain’s Sarah Beth Grey 6-2, 6-2.

The win ended a nine-match losing streak for the Swiss, eight of which were defeats in qualifying rounds, while one of them was a first-round defeat in Bogota.

The 20-year-old right-hander’s best showing this year was at Guadalajara, where she beat Japan’s Kyoka Okamura and India’s Ankita Raina to reach the main draw and then knocked out Nina Stojanovic in the Round of 32 before falling to Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second round.

Kung, who reached the girls’ final at the Wimbledon in 2018, played her only WTA final in Thailand last year. Coming through as a qualifier, Kung defeated seventh seed Lin Zhu in the Round of 16, third seed Qiang Wang in the quarterfinals and the eighth seed Nao Hibino in the semifinals before falling to fifth seed Magda Linette in the final.
