Chardy Hoping to Improve on Grass Record

Chardy is at his most comfortable on clay and that shows in both, his overall win-loss record and the fact his only title came on clay as well.

On grass, however, Chardy is 28-30 in win-loss which, over a period of nearly two decades of his tennis career, indicates he has neither played in a lot of tournaments on that surface, nor gone too deep in those competitions.

The last time he participated on grass was in 2019 and Chardy won two matches across three tournaments. A second round exit at both, the Queen’s competition and Wimbledon sandwiched an opening loss at Eastbourne to Cameron Norrie that season.

That had come after what had been his best year on grass.

In 2018, he had reached the final at Hertogenbosch and won a title on the Challenger circuit in Surbiton – both on grass.

Can he start off strongly in this curtailed grass swing in 2021?

Hanfmann 6-10 This Season

After the kind of season Hanfmann had in 2020 despite all the issues with the pandemic, one expected him to take that next step forward. Unfortunately for him, he has struggled to get going, losing six of his 16 main draw matches this year across both clay and hard court competitions.

In fact it’s been nearly a month and a half since he won a match in the main draw of a competition, defeating Taro Daniel in the first round of Munich. Before that, he had won a couple of rounds in Cagliari in the first week of April.

That performance in Cagliari was the only time he won back to back matches in a tournament this year, coming in from having reached the final at the Kitzbuhel Open last year and won the Todi Challenger as well.

Hanfmann has barely played on grass all his career and will find it difficult to get going on it.

Chardy v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip

Chardy is an obvious favourite here against a player who has barely featured in grass court competitions and won next to nothing this season. Backing him to win this.
