Konta Makes a Good Start

World No. 20 Johanna Konta began her Nottingham Open campaign in style, defeating World No. 177 Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove of the Netherlands in the second round on Tuesday.

Konta needed just an hour and four minutes to dispatch the qualifier 6-1, 6-3.

In what was a dominant display, the Briton converted five of seven break points in the match. She didn’t face a single break point in the first set, but was broken once in the second. The 30-year-old three-time major semifinalist was also good with her serve, landing 61.7% first serves and winning 89.7% of those points.

A two-time finalist at Nottingham, Konta improved to 4-7 in 2021 and ended a three-match losing streak, which began with a defeat to Anastasija Sevastova in the second round in Madrid. Since then she had lost to Jelena Ostapenko in Rome and Sorana Cirstea at Roland Garros.

The former World  No. 4, who received a first round bye, reached two finals in Nottingham in 2017 and 2018, but fell to Donna Vekic and Ashleigh Barty respectively. Both those finals had needed a third set to decide the winner.

Kozlova Takes Out the 13th Seed

Konta will next face Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova, who knocked out 13th seed American Madison Brengle in the second round on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian, ranked 159th in the world, needed two hours and nine minutes to beat the World No. 84, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

It was a third three-setter in the past four days for Kozlova, who had qualified for the main draw with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Serbia’s Natalija Kostic on Saturday and then rallied from a set down yet again in the first round to defeat Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday.

Tuesday’s win improved Kozlova to 6-3 on the tour, including qualifiers. The 27-year-old had 18 break points against Brengle but she converted only five of them. She also faced 11 break points, saving eight of them. A total of 196 points were played in the match and Kozlova won 105 of them.

Having won three tight matches in a row, Kozlova will be taking a lot of confidence going into the Round of 16, but faces a huge test against the top seed.

Konta v Kozlova Prediction and Tip

Following a dominant start, Konta will be looking to keep the form going and get into a good rhythm in the tournament. Kozlova will be a tad tired after three three-setters in a row. Expect Konta to keep the momentum going with a straight sets win.
