Shuai Zhang v Lauren Davis Head to Head

The two ladies have met just thrice and Zhang leads 2-1 in the head to head tally. They last met in the 2020 WTA Hobart where the 32-year-old Chinese outclassed her American adversary 6-1, 6-4.

Zhang Overcomes Mladenovic in Three-Set Thriller

Shuai Zhang had to work hard to reach the semifinal here in the Nottingham Open. After winning her opening two matches in a row, she ran into a lot of resistance from the Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic. So much so that she had to fight until the final set tiebreak to clinch the win.

The game lasted for a little under two and a half hours and saw Zhang take the win with 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4). This is the first time that Zhang has made it this far in a singles tournament since the French Open 2020 – back then, she made it to the fourth round. In the preceding week, she was a quarterfinalist in the Strasbourg Open while earlier that year, she was a runner-up in the Hobart International.

Clearly, it has been a long wait for the World No. 46 to make it this deep into a WTA tournament. Given the abysmal season she has had, not many would have predicted such a performance from her.

From the Australian Open in February to the French Open last week, Zhang featured in nine singles tournament. She lost her first-round bout in eight of those except for the Strasbourg Open, where she fell in the second round.

Davis Survives Boulter

No. 14 seed Lauren Davis may have just gotten lucky in her quarterfinal bout against the Brit Katie Boulter. The American lost the first set in a tiebreaker but a few moments after that result, Boulter retired from the match due to fitness concerns. With that, Davis got a walkover into the semis.

The 27-year-old American is looking to win her first singles title in over five years – the last time she reached the final of a WTA event was in the 2017 Auckland Open. She won the tournament after beating Ana Konjuh in the final.

Since then, Davis’s form on the tour has taken quite a beating. Currently ranked in the mid-80s, Davis has had a pretty bleak season barring a couple of exceptions. After a winless Australian Open Series, she had a breakthrough in WTA Guadalajara where she reached the quarterfinal as a qualifier. A few weeks later, she reached the third round in the WTA Charleston, beating Sofia Kenin en route.

That was her best run of the season, at least up until now. With this semifinal appearance in Nottingham, she has assured herself of 110 ranking points – the highest she has garnered in a WTA Tour event this season.

Zhang v Davis Prediction and Tip

Zhang will start this game as the odds-on favourite but it may very well be a close game. It wouldn’t be surprising if this goes into three sets.
