Angelique Kerber v Misaki Doi Head to Head

Kerber holds a 5-0 lead over Doi although, their last meeting took place in the 2016 Wimbledon. Kerber won that match 6-3, 6-1.

The two ladies had also met in a German tournament in the 2015 WTA Nurnberg – Kerber, not so surprisingly, prevailed in that game too in straight sets.

Kerber Looking to Reinvent Herself on Grass

The 33-year-old Angelique Kerber has had a season full of struggles as the German looks to reclaim her former glory. Playing as a wildcard in Berlin, she is coming in with a win-loss tally of 8-9.

Suffice to say, she has been beaten in the early rounds in a majority of the tournaments she has featured in 2021. Among her best runs are the quarterfinal stint in the Grampians Trophy and a third-round appearance in the Italian Open (where she beat Simona Halep in round two).

Most recently, she featured in the French Open where the World No. 27 incurred a shock defeat to the #139th ranked Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets.

That said, Kerber does have a good track record on the grass, winning two titles and four runner-up trophies. As a two-time Wimbledon finalist (going the distance in 2018), she has certainly enjoyed a fair amount of success in grass tournaments and if there was a time for her to find her groove again, the next few tournaments would be it.

Lucky for her, her first-round opponent here in the German Open is struggling a great deal with her form herself.

Doi Clears her Qualifiers

Misaki Doi has so far had a promising run in Berlin as she cleared her qualifying rounds with some ease. Just yesterday, she beat the German Anna-Lena Friedsam in three sets to earn her main draw ticket.

With that stint, she has snapped her four-match losing streak and started her grass season on a positive note. Between the Italian Open, WTA Parma, Strasbourg Open, and the French Open, Doi has fallen right in her opening matches.

Toward the start of the season, however, the 30-year-old Japanese was certainly having a much better spell on the tour. She made it to the third round in the Phillip Island Trophy and followed it with a couple of second-round appearances in WTA Doha and WTA Dubai, as a qualifier. Doi also had a similar run in Adelaide International too.

As for her overall performance on the grass courts through the year, her winning percentage (53.45%) is certainly higher than the respective figures on clay or hard courts. But then again, she has not played in that many grass tournaments either. Nonetheless, the fact that she has seen some wins on this surface may come in handy against Kerber.

Kerber v Doi Prediction and Tip

On any other day, Kerber would have started this game as the overwhelming favourite. However, she has struggled a lot of late and Doi can very well capitalise on this to make life difficult for her German adversary.

Kerber may win this match but it wouldn’t be surprising if it turns into a slogfest.
