Leylah Fernandez v Yafan Wang Head to Head
Wang won their only previous matchup in Liuzhou in 2018.

Fernandez on the Rise
Leylah Fernandez has been terrific over the last two years and the 18-year-old Canadian will look to bring that form to grass courts this year.
Fernandez is 12-7 in the main draws in 2021 and claimed her maiden WTA title in Monterrey by winning five matches in a row, including the final against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic.
The World No. 66 had reached her first final in Acapulco last year but couldn’t win the title after losing to Heather Watson in three.
Fernandez, who reached the third round of the French Open last year, lost in the second round to Madison Keys this year.
The left-handed Canadian was the girl’s champion in Roland Garros in 2019 and the girl’s runner-up at the Australian Open the same year.

Wang in Woeful Form
Facing Fernandez will be China’s Yafan Wang who qualified for the main draw after defeating Russia’s Marina Melnikova 6-3, 7-5 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
The Chinese player, ranked 118th in the world, had beaten another Russian Valeria Savinykh 6-1, 6-4 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
Wang, 27, who reached a career-high ranking of 47 in 2019, won her only WTA title in Acapulco in 2019 after rallying from a set down to beat Sofia Kenin in the final.
A winner of three doubles titles in her career, Wang has had a pretty forgettable year in singles so far. Prior to the qualifiers in Birmingham, Wang had played 15 singles matches across levels this year, losing 14 of them. The only one that she won was against Colombia’s lowly ranked Emiliana Arango in the first round in Bogota.
She carried her woeful form to the grass courts, as she was eliminated by Australia’s Lizette Cabrera in the first round of the Nottingham Open last week.
Having won two in a row over the last two days, she will be much confident going into the first round.
