Daria Kasatkina v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head

Kostyuk has taken both their previous matches, winning in the first round of the U.S. Open last year and in the Round of 16 in Istanbul this year. None of those matches needed a third set.

Kasatkina Rallies to Beat Hercog

World No. 35 Daria Kasatkina overcame a first-set deficit to win her first-round match against Slovenia’s Polona Hercog at the Birmingham Open on Tuesday.

The up and down two-hour-and-12-minute contest eventually ended with the Russian winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Both players had plenty of break points in the match, but it was Kasatkina who had a better conversion rate, converting eight of nine. Her opponent had 16 break point chances, but Kasatkina saved 10 of them.

The 24-year-old Russian had a brilliant start to 2021, winning two titles in the first quarter. A four-time winner on the tour, Kasatkina won the Phillip Island Trophy by beating Marie Bouzkova in the final and then won the St. Petersburg title by defeating compatriot Margarita Gasparyan in the title clash. Kasatkina was leading 6-3, 2-1 when the latter had to retire from the contest.

Kasatkina, who improved to 21-9 after Tuesday’s win, lost her early season form on clay, going 5-5 on the surface. She will now be hoping to regain that form on grass. Kasatkina has an overall record of 11-8 on grass, which includes a run to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2018.

Kostyuk Battles Past Brengle

Facing Kasatkina in the next round will be Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who too had to fight back from a set down in the first round on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Ukrainian, who reached a career-high ranking of 65 this week, needed two hours and 26 minutes to defeat America’s Madison Brengle 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Kostyuk saved six of nine break points and converted four of seven, winning a total of 121 points in the match, just five more than her opponent.

Kostyuk has been very impressive in her young career. The 2017 Australian Open girl’s champion reached the third round of the Melbourne slam on her debut as a 15-year-old in 2018.

Last year this Ukrainian reached the Round of 32 at the U.S. Open and this year she produced her best Grand Slam showing with a run to the Round of 16 in Roland Garros.

Kostyuk outplayed Garbine Muguruza, Saisai Zheng and Varvara Gracheva in the first three rounds before falling to Iga Swiatek in the straight sets.

The Ukrainian, who doesn’t have much experience on grass, began the year by reaching the semifinals in Abu Dhabi and then made another final four appearance later in the year, when she reached the semifinal in Istanbul. She is yet to reach a final and will be looking to keep her impressive run going on grass courts.

Kasatkina v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina is far more experienced, higher-ranked and also seeded in the tournament. She will be the favourite to win the contest, but the fact that she hasn’t won against Kostyuk will play on her mind. It will be interesting to see if Kostyuk can keep her winning record against Kasatkina intact even on grass.
