Garbine Muguruza v Alize Cornet Head to Head

There have been three previous matches played between these two and Muguruza leads 2-1 on head to head.

In 2012 in Bucharest, Muguruza won in three sets, and then made it 2-0 in Sofia in 2014 in the Tournament of Champions. Cornet’s only win came at the 2017 Brisbane International when Muguruza retired from the match while trailing 1-4.

Cornet Continues Her Stunning Run

Cornet’s overall career record coming into this competition was appalling to say the least. Across all the different competitions and qualifiers, she had won just 19 of the 49 matches she had played.

All of a sudden the Frenchwoman has won two in two but more importantly those victories have come against two highly-talented and higher-ranked players. In the first, she routed Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-1 while she clinched a second round victory against Bianca Andreescu, again in straight sets.

And while Cornet’s second round win wasn’t as straightforward as her first – she needed two hours and seven minutes to get there – the world number 63 would be pleased to have taken the scalp of a top-10 player.

Cornet was up a break early in the first, dropped her serve soon after and then staved off set-points in both, the 10th and 12th game to push it into a tie-breaker. There was no looking back for Cornet in it as she raced off to a 7-2 win.

The second set saw Cornet break Andreescu twice, then drop her serve the same number of times before getting a decisive break in the 11th game to finish things off 7-6 (2), 7-5.

Muguruza Wastes No Time on Rybakina

After Muguruza’s recent on-court discomfiture, mainly due to fitness-related issues, things seem to have settled down a little for the Spaniard on grass.

The former Wimbledon champion has won back to back rounds here and it’s not just those wins which should add to the confidence. It’s the opposition quality and the ease of wins too.

In the first round after registering a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sorana Cirstea, Muguruza carved out another straight-set victory against Elena Rybakina in the second. She needed an hour and 43 minutes to get past Rybakina 6-4, 6-3, breaking her opponent four times and dropping her own serve just once.

Muguruza did face seven break-points in the match but saved six of them which exhibited her ability to put it across under pressure.

Can the Spaniard now move to her first ever semifinal at a grass event since her Wimbledon title in 2017.

Muguruza v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Muguruza’s excellent form makes her a 2/9 favourite to win this and 8/13 to do that in straight sets. Expecting her to do that here.
