Belinda Bencic v Alize Cornet Head to Head
Bencic holds a 2-1 lead over Cornet, last beating the 31-year-old in the US Open 2019.

Bencic Survives Alexandrova in the Quarters
World No. 12 Belinda Bencic had to work for her semifinal place here in Berlin against the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova. That quarterfinal bout lasted for over two and a half hours and saw Bencic win in the final set tie-break with 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4). That game could have very well gone either way but the Swiss played with great maturity and confidence to win that nail biter.
Bencic is now just one win away from reaching her second singles final of the season. Earlier this year, she made it to the Adelaide International final where she fell to Iga Swiatek in final.
Since then, the 24-year-old has lost in the early rounds in most of the tournaments she played in. With the exception of the Madrid Open where she was a quarterfinalist, Bencic never quite made it to the penultimate rounds, especially on clay.
But on grass, she has been just the opposite. Having delivered a week of brilliant performance here in Berlin, the former top 10 player will certainly fancy her chances of going the distance. And why shouldn’t she – Bencic has reached the final of three grass tournaments and has also made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon a couple of times.

Cornet Delivers her Best Run of the Season
With this semifinal appearance here in Berlin, Alize Cornet has delivered what is undoubtedly one of the best performances of her singles career, as well as her 2021 season.
The fact that she beat two top-10 players en route to the semis – Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza – tells us that she is the dark horse in the German Open and the player to beat. In fact, she beat Muguruza in a final-set tiebreaker (just like Bencic) with 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), displaying some solid nerves of steel in that match.
In many ways, this kind of run has been long overdue for the 31-year-old. The last time Cornet enjoyed a run like this was in the 2019 Swiss Open, where she fell in the final to Fiona Ferro. Since then, the #63 ranked player has spent her time trying to navigate her early-round fixtures on the tour.
With a win-loss tally of 10-14 before the WTA Berlin, Cornet has had a pretty uneventful spell so far this year. The best she did before this sensational run on grass was reaching the third round in the Charleston Open.
Bencic v Cornet Prediction and Tip
Cornet is on fire in this tournament – first she dispatched the American teen prodigy Amanda Anisimova and then, the top-ranked players.
She will more than fancy her chances here but Bencic’s grass pedigree and slightly superior form should make life tricky for her. Expect another nail-biting affair in the German Open.
