Samsonova Delivers a Career-Defining Run

22-year-old Liudmila Samsonova has had one of the best weeks in her professional tennis career here in the German Open.

Starting as a qualifier, Samsonova has successfully overcome a series of formidable opponents, including former top 10 players Madison Keys and Victoria Azarenka. This feat also marks the Russian’s first singles final appearance in a WTA event on the tour.

Samsonova started off with a straight-set win over Marketa Voundrousova in the opener. Next, she beat Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-3, to reach the quarters. Against the American Keys, the youngster was just as impressive as she took the match in the final-set tie-break with 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(0).

It was supposed to be a stern test against the veteran Belarusian Victoria Azarenka too but Samsonova was simply too good for the former World No. 1. In a little over an hour, the #106 ranked player dispatched the 31-year-old with 6-4, 6-2.

Before this sensational run in Berlin, the best Samsonova had delivered in the 2021 season was a third-round feat in the Miami Open and a second-round stint in the Australian Open, both as a qualifier. She is certainly a promising player and a run like this will do wonders for her confidence and form.

Business as Usual for Bencic

World No. 12 Belinda Bencic continued her brilliant start to the grass season by beating the Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinal.

She now finds herself competing in her fourth grass final. In the past, she has done well to win the Eastbourne Open in 2015 along with settling for the runners-up trophy in the Rosmalen Open and Mallorca Open over the years.

That said, it is not surprising to see Bencic play so well in this grass tournament. As a Wimbledon juniors champion, she has always preferred this surface and has been quite exceptional on the same.

On the whole, this is the Swiss’s second singles final appearance in 2021. Her last stint was the Adelaide International where she fell to Iga Swiatek in the final. The 24-year-old has had a much better season in terms of wins and consistency than Samsonova. While she did falter a bit in the clay swing (quarterfinal run in Madrid being her best run on clay), she has done well to find her groove in Berlin.

Bencic v Samsonova Prediction and Tip

Bencic is not oblivious to performing in finals but Samsonova may find herself battling with the nerves. While she has been nothing but superb in toppling the big guns, facing Bencic on the turf of her choice is a whole different ballgame.

Expect a three-setter, one where Bencic ought to come out on the top owing to her superior pedigree and overall form.
