Medvedev Looking for First Win on Grass in 2021

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev will begin his Mallorcan challenge in the second round on Tuesday, after the top seed was given a first-round bye.

The Russian, however, is on a two-match losing streak. He lost the Roland Garros quarterfinal to Stefanos Tsitsipas and then was handed a shock first-round defeat by Jan Lennard Struff on his grass opener at Halle.

The 2019 U.S. Open finalist, who reached a second major final at the Australian Open earlier this year, has had a decent 22-7 record this year.

He began the season by helping Russia win the ATP Cup; and then picked his 10th career title by defeating Pierre Hugues-Herbert in the Marseille final. Medvedev also finally ended the Roland Garros jinx by winning his first match after losing all four previous main draw matches. The win over Alexander Bublik in the first round was a massive confidence booster as he went on to win three more on trot to reach the last eight before being outplayed by the eventual finalist.

The 6’6″ Russian, who has played in 17 career finals, has never made it to a grass-court final. However he did make it to the semifinals at Eastbourne in 2017 and Queen’s in 2019.

Medvedev has an 18-13 record on grass and that includes two third-round finishes at Wimbledon and one second-round finish on debut in 2017.

Moutet Overpowers Harris

Facing Medvedev will be the feisty Corentin Moutet, who knocked out World No. 51 Lloyd Harris of South Africa in the first round on Monday.

Not facing a single break point in the match, the French left-hander broke his opponent thrice from seven breaking chances to win the contest 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes.

The 22-year-old is playing his second tournament on grass this year. He played his first at Halle last week, advancing to the second round after his opponent David Goffin retired with the match tied at one-set apiece. Moutet went down to Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets in the next round.

Ranked No. 85 in the world, the Frenchman is 11-7 in 2021 and his best came at Melbourne-2, where he defeated three higher-ranked players in Frances Tiafoe, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Grigor Dimitrov to reach the semifinal, before falling to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

He was also a quarterfinalist in Estoril, where he defeated Denis Shapovalov in the Round of 16, and reached the third round in Barcelona by defeating Dominik Koepfer and Dan Evans (both ranked higher than him) in the first two rounds respectively.

He had also caused a few upsets on his way to the final in Doha last year, which he lost to Andrey Rublev in straight sets.

Medvedev v Moutet Prediction and Tip

Time and again Moutet has shown that he is a tough competitor and can spring a surprise on a given day. He won’t make it easy for Medvedev, but the Russian should come out victorious as he looks to get into a rhythm before the Wimbledon.
