Swiatek Forced to Fight by Watson

Swiatek was in the first grass court encounter of the season and that came through. In a first round match against Heather Watson that could have gone either way, Swiatek prevailed in a tough three-setter to clinch a second round berth.

The Polish player, who has already won two titles this season, looked to have garnered control of the match she broke her British opponent in the eighth game of the opening set before pocketing the set to love in the next game.

She then missed out on two break-point opportunities in the first and fifth games before exchanging breaks of serves that took the set into a tie-breaker. It turned out to be majorly in favour of Watson, who upped the ante, won the tie-breaker and made it a set apiece.

Watson then got the early break in the third set, and took a 4-1 lead with two breaks of serves before Swiatek showed her who’s the boss. She broke Watson three times out of opponent’s next four service games.

Swiatek now takes on a tougher opponent in round two.

Kasatkina Continues Fine Grass Form

Kasatkina might not be a favourit going into this match against Swiatek but she does enter the tournament on the back of some sterling grass court form. The Russian has won five of her last six matches and finished runner-up in the tournament played last week in Birmingham as well.

Coming into this competition after losing to Ons Jabeur in the final in Birmingham, Kasatkina was a set up against Vera Zvonareva before the latter retired from the match. Kasatkina won 7-5, 2-2.

Earlier this season, Kasatkina had shown enough spark enough on the other surfaces including hard court title wins at Phillip Island Trophy an the St. Petersbirg Open.

Can she now up the ante against a player of the pedigree of Swiatek who had no opening difficulties.
