Bianca Andreescu v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Kontaveit is 1-0 from their only previous meeting at the Miami Open in 2019. Andreescu retired with a should injury while trailing 1-6, 0-2  in the Round of 16 contest.

Andreescu Wins First Main Draw Match on Grass

World No. 7 and third seed Bianca Andreescu notched her first-ever main draw win on grass as edged past America’s Christina McHale in the first round of the Eastbourne International on Tuesday.

The Canadian needed two hours and four minutes for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 victory against the World No. 96.

Knocked out in the first round at Wimbledon in 2017 and in the qualifiers in 2018, Andreescu began her 2021 grass-court season in Berlin, but remained winless in the main draws after being handed a first-round defeat by Alize Cornet. It was a second consecutive first-round exit for the Canadian, who was eliminated in the Roland Garros opener by Tamara Zidansek.

On Tuesday, the 2019 U.S. Open champion had 13 opportunities to break McHale’s serve and she capitalised on five of those chances. The Canadian also faced eight break points on her serve but managed to save four of them.

The 21-year-old right-hander, who has three titles from five finals, is 12-5 this year and that includes a runner-up finish at the Miami Open. Andreescu won four three-setters in a row to setup the title clash with Ashleigh Barty, but couldn’t finish the final, retiring while trailing 3-6, 0-4.

Out of action for 15 months due to a knee injury, Andreescu made a comeback at the Australian Open earlier this year. She made a second-round exit from the Melbourne major, but found some momentum at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she reached the semifinals. She carried that form to Miami but hasn’t done much since then.

Tuesday’s win was her 12th this year, with eight of those victories coming in three sets.

Kontaveit Edges Out Kuznetsova

On Wednesday, Andreescu will face Estonia’s Annett Kontaveit, who, too, needed three sets to win her first-round match against former World No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Kontaveit saved seven of 10 break points and converted four of 11 to beat the two-time major champion 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in an hour and 55 minutes.

Ranked 27th in the world, the 25-year-old Estonian is 15-8 this year. She reached the Grampians Trophy final (sharing it with Ann Li after the final got cancelled) and was a quarterfinalist in Doha and Stuttgart. She also reached the third rounds of both the majors this year.

A 2020 Australian Open quarterfinalist, Kontaveit has a 15-12 record on grass. She reached the third round of Wimbledon in the previous three editions and also won her only title on the surface, at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2017.

Andreescu v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit has a lot of experience on grass courts and that will give her a slight advantage. Andreescu, on the other hand, will be looking to build on the start and get more wins on grass before the start of Wimbledon.

The Canadian has fought hard throughout the year and will be ready for another three-setter on Wednesday.
