It’s gone from bad to worse for the Frenchman but thanks to the tweaked ATP ranking system, he has been able to retain his world number 16. Because with a 2-7 win-loss record spread across seven tournaments, Monfils would have fallen off the rankings cliff otherwise.
His latest in the list of poor shows came at the Halle Open where Monfils failed to get going against Lloyd Harris and lost 6-4, 6-4.
Monfils’ only two wins this year came on clay, having reached second round at Lyon and French Open.
As far as Monfils’ record on grass is concerned, the 34-year-old hasn’t done too badly overall with 40 wins to 29 defeats marking his career but that’s his own worst among the surfaces he has played. The last time he took to a grass court was in 2019 and Monfils won just one of his four matches and was bundled out in the first round at Wimbledon.

Purcell Registers Second Main Draw Win of the Year
It’s interesting to see Purcell, a player ranked 287th in the world and one with a career-best ranking of outside 200, has also won two matches this year – the same as Monfils.
The first of those victories had come earlier in Australia where he had a wildcard for the Great Ocean Road Open but more importantly, he added a second here on the grass courts of Eastbourne.
Purcell reached the second round here with a hard-fought victory over fellow Aussie James Duckworth, winning 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5). He raced off to win the first set with two breaks of serves, and then lost his own service once in the second set to push the match into a third.
Duckworth held a one break advantage after the seventh game but Purcell broke back the very next and then overturned a 2-4 deficit to clinch the victory.
And with Monfils in the kind of form that he is, Purcell might even fancy his chances here.

Monfils is 4/11 to win this which is understandable given his overall record but current form dictates we look at this being a lot closer contest.
