Karolina Pliskova v Tamara Zidansek Head to Head

Pliskova and Zidansek have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Pliskova Makes Horrible Grass Start

It isn’t as if Pliskova’s season was going great guns before she switched over to grass. There was that final at Italian Open, her best showing of the season, and even that ended with a 6-0, 6-0 drubbing in the title-decided at the hands of Iga Swiatek.

Other than that, Pliskova had won just 11 of the 20 matches she played in coming into the grass swing. Ordinarily that would have been good news for a strong server like Pliskova but she has made a mess of the start.

The former world number one, who has now fallen to 10th in the world, fell in straight sets to Jessica Pegula in her opener at German Open to kick start things off on grass. Having already lost to the American thrice before this in 2021, that result came as no surprise.

However, it was Pliskova’s second opening loss in a row at Eastbourne Open that would have hurt. The Czech went down in three sets from being a set up against Camila Giorgi and what that means is Pliskova enters Wimbledon quite low on confidence.

Can she shrug that showing off and make a stronger start this time around?

In Form But Zidansek Playing First Match on Grass

That Zidansek is in some brilliant form can be gauged from the fact she made it to the semifinal at French Open, taking down Bianca Andreescu, Sorana Cirstea and Paula Badosa on the way.

Earlier, Zidansek had also entered the final of the Bogota Open and there has been a third round appearance at Abu Dhabi Open as well.

So as far as form goes, Zidansek should come into Wimbledon with a whole load of confidence.

The trouble, unfortunately, for the Slovenian player is her lack of grass court match practice or overall experience. She has neither played a match this season, nor featured in too many matches otherwise on this surface.

In fact her career record on grass reads two wins and two losses, along with two other exits at the qualifying stages of competitions.

Can she still stun the higher-ranked but off-colour Pliskova?

Pliskova v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Pliskova is a favourite at 4/11 and while her form hasn’t been top notch, we believe a strong serve and Zidansek’s lack of grass court match-time will allow the Czech to get away with a win here.
