Bautista Agut Holds Off Millman

2019 Wimbledon semifinalist Roberto Bautista Agut made a winning return to Wimbledon, defeating Australia’s John Millman in the opening round of the tournament on Monday.

Into the main draws at the Wimbledon for a seventh time, Bautista Agut maintained his perfect first round record with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over the World No. 43 Millman.

The three-hour-and-three-minute contest saw the World No. 10 hit 26 winners and make 40 unforced errors compared to his opponent’s 32 winners and 49 unforced errors.

The eighth seed Spaniard converted five of seven break points in the match and saved two of five that he faced. He also converted better percentage of net points than Millman, winning 20 of 24, while his opponent won 26 of 41.

Bautista Agut, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semifinal in 2019, improved to 21-15 this year and 2-2 on grass.

A nine-time winner and a nine-time runner-up on the tour, the 33-year-old Spaniard reached the finals in Montpellier and Doha earlier this year, but couldn’t win the titles after falling to David Goffin and Nikoloz Basilashvilli respectively.

Bautista Agut also made it to a maiden semifinal at the Miami Masters but fell to Jannik Sinner. He didn’t have a great clay season, which saw him deliver a 7-5 record from five tournaments. On grass, he bowed out of the first round at Halle and then lost in the second round in Mallorca.

Kecmanovic Sends Bagnis Packing

Bautista Agut will meet Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the second round after the World No. 49 defeated Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in the first round on Monday.

The two-hour-and-42-minute match saw the Serb edge through with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) win.

Kecmanovic had 16 break point opportunities in the match but he could convert just three of them. Bagnis on the other hand could create just four breaking chances, capitalising on two of them.

The Argentine served 14 aces to Kecmanovic’s eight and also struck 55 winners compared to the Serb’s 39, but Kecmanovic showed better control in his game making just three double faults and 21 unforced errors compared to Bagnis’s seven double faults and 38 unforced errors.

The win improved the 21-year-old Serb to 11-14 this year. Kecmanovic had also reached the second round on his Wimbledon debut in 2019.

The winner of the 2020 Kitzbuhel title, Kecmanovic was 1-5 from his previous six matches. His best this year was a semifinal finish at Buenos Aires and he also reached the last eight at Melbourne-1 and Belgrade.
