Kudla Produces First Round Surprise

The last time the Wimbledon Championship was played, American Kudla came through the qualifying competition to make the second round and now he has done it again, after pulling off one of the surprise results on the opening day of this year’s tournament.

Playing the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, the world number 35, and  number 30 seed,   Kudla did it the hard way though, coming from two sets down and a break down in the tie-break to eventually win through in five sets.

Kudla began badly, dropping his opening service game, and , although he hit back to level, he dropped it once more and the Spaniard took the first set.

In the second set it was the American who drew first blood with the opening break, but then dropped his service twice in succession as Davidovich-Fokina seemingly took control of the match.

And, after the third set went to a tie-break, It was the Spaniard who had his nose in front and was apparently on the verge of victory.  But the American refused to bow and hit back, two successive points against the Spaniard’s serve enabling him to pinch the third set.

The tide was beginning to turn, and the odd service break in three gave Kudla the advantage in the fourth set, which he consolidated with a further break,

The decisive moment though came at the start of the fifth set when Davidovich-Fokina was broken once more.

That proved to be the last chance the Spaniard got. He saved a match point on his own serve, but the next game, Kudla served out for the match.

Seppi’s Long Wimbledon Career

Seppi is now at the veteran stage of his career, having fits played at Wimbledon in 2005.

In all that time, the best he has managed is a fourth round appearance in 2013, although he has made the third round on three separate occasions.

He began his 2021 campaign with a match against the Portuguese number one, Joao Sousa, the world ranked 120, a man more at home on a clay court.

Despite that, it was Sousa who started the better of the pair, forcing the opening break and taking the first set on the back of it.

The second set began with both men dropping their serve, but then it settled down  and this , time, it was Seppi who broke, going on to level the match,

Again, the pair swapped service break at the start of the third set. Sousa had three break points but could not covert them and then it was Seppi’s turn to miss break point opportunities which were offered.

The set though was finally decided after  a marathon 12th game, which saw no fewer than 13 deuces, before Seppi was finally able to convert a set point.

Again, Sousa had break opportunities in the fourth set, could not take them, and was made to pay, as he was broken again next game. Seppi finally wrapped-up proceedings with another break.

Kudla v Seppi Prediction and Tip

As the far more experienced player oi the two, especially in Grand Slam events, Seppi will start  the favourite, although Kudla will go into the match full of confidence after his first round victory over Davidovich-Fokina.
