Petra Martic v Irina Camelia Begu Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two; one of which came at Fed Cup in 2012 and the other, more recent one at the 2018 Australian Open. Martic won both of them.

Begu Wins on Grass Again

The last time Begu won a main draw WTA match on a grass court was nearly four years ago when she defeated Naomi Broady in the first round at the 2017 Wimbledon.

Since then, Begu had struggled to get going as she lost her openers at both, Wimbledon and Eastbourne 2018 and then failed to qualify for this major in 2019.

As it turned out, Begu was drawn to play Katie Volynets, a qualifier who has herself never been ranked better than 196th in the world. Having not dropped a set during the qualifiers, Volynets was quick off the blocks to take a 3-1 and 4-2 lead in the first set but Begu reeled off four games in a row pocket the opening set.

Volynets went one better in the second. She broke her opponent two times to race off to a 4-0 lead but was then broken in each of her following four service games by Begu to capitulate to a defeat in an hour and 39 minutes.

Begu, who hadn’t won a main draw match this season since making the quarterfinal at Phillip Island Trophy in February, will heave a sigh of relief but can she now double her grass win tally for the season?

Martic Scrapes Through Against Gracheva

Despite having gone into her opening round match against Varvara Gracheva at 1/4 odds on favourite to clinch the victory, Martic had a tough time dealing with her 90th-ranked opponent.

She needed three sets and two hours and 33 minutes to scrape past Gracheva 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 to seal her place in the second round.

The difference between the two players was stark with Gracheva outdoing her on the winners 32-18 and despite hitting more unforced errors as a result of that (56-45), life didn’t seem easy in the middle for Martic.

Martic also missed a chance to serve out for the first set before losing the tie-breaker and when that same issue repeated in the second at 5-3, it looked like it wasn’t going to be her day. That turned around when Martic broke Gracheva again to pocket the set and then again two times in a row in the third to race away to a 5-0 lead.

And while Martic lost her serve once after that to give Gracheva an opening, she served it out soon after to edge into round two.

Martic v Camelia Begu Prediction and Tip

While Martic starts out a favourite at 3/5, it might not be as straightforward a match as the bookmakers think. Begu could push Martic into a third in this one.
