Number 20 On The Line For Djokovic

World number one Novak Djokovic continues his quest for history as he looks to join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with 20 major titles each.

He is also eyeing his third consecutive major of the year giving him a shot at the US Open to win the calendar slam, to become the first man since Rod Laver to complete this feat. A potential OIympic gold in addition would make him the second tennis player after Steffi Graf to win the Golden Grand Slam

After having dropped his first set at Wimbledon this year to Scott Draper, it has been smooth sailing for the Serb coming in to the semi-finals with four straight set victories since. Next Gen Denis Shapovalov was in his first ever major semi- final riding on a high, knocking on the top ten in the ATP rankings and having beaten the likes of Andy Murray, Roberto Bautista Agut and Karen Khachanov en route.

The Canadian started well breaking Djokovic early but then was unable to serve out the set at 5-4. A first set tiebreak followed and the clinical Djokovic sealed it 7-3.

Shapovalov was able to maintain the tempo in the second set but failed to convert 15-40 situations twice on the Serb’s serve. Serving at 5-5, the number ten seed buckled under the pressure, only to be broken for 5-6 and the world number one serving out for a 7-5 second set.

Shapovalov maintained his level in the third set but again got tight up break point and it looked like another set heading to a breaker. In similar fashion to set two, Shapovalov felt the pressure and the nerves at 5-5, only to get broken and for Djokovic to serve out the match 7-5 in the third.

In a 30th major final, Djokovic has his sights on a record equaling 20th major title and sixth Wimbledon crown and more so a third major in a row for the year..

First Major Final For Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini came to the grass swing confident at the back of strong runs Down Under early in the season, and more recently on the clay courts at Belgrade, Madrid and Roland Garros.

The Italian had a good run on the grass in 2019 winning a title in Stuttgart and lived up to his top seed billing at Queens’ Club winning the title heading into Wimbledon earlier in June.

After a challenging four set opener against Guido Pella, the Italian settled into the groove and recorded straight set wins against Botic Van de Zandschulp, Aljaz Bedene and Ilya Ivashka. A well fought quarter final against Felix Auger-Aliassime followed but Berrettini upped the ante when needed and prevailed in four sets.

His semi-final opponent Hubert Hurkacz was coming off two big wins, against Daniil Medvedev and more so Roger Federer and was unable to start on the right note as Berrettini raced to a 6-3,6-0 two set lead. A tight third set followed and Hurkacz took control of the tiebreak and the match headed for a fourth set.

Similar to his quarter-final, Berrettini took control of the match when needed and was up a break early in the fourth in good time to close a four setter and be the first Italian man to make the Wimbledon finals..

Djokovic v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

Berrettini has looked good and promising all through the season and especially on grass and will not go out without a fight. But he is on the biggest stage against a man who has a tryst with destiny, and is the sternest test in tennis at the moment if not ever. It will all depend on the mental state and nerves of the Italian. Expect grand slam number 20 for Djokovic in four sets.
