Jiri Vesely v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

In both of the two previous outings between these players, Vesely defeated Caruso in straight sets. The first of those came at the 2020 Pune Open before Vesely won earlier this year on the grass court of Mallorca.

This will be the first time they will face off on grass.

Vesely Poor Run of Form Extends to February

It was the early days of February earlier this season when Vesely stormed into the semifinal of the Murray River Open, a tune-up tournament before the Australian Open. He fought hard against Felix Auger-Aliassime before a shoulder injury forced him out of the tournament.

Since then, Vesely has neither had good form, nor health.

The Czech player has already retired from two of his matches after that first retirement including one at Wimbledon two weeks ago, while having won a whopping total of four matches in all. None of these wins were back to back in nature.

Which is sad because when Vesely lifted his first ATP title in more than five years in Pune last year, it seemed like a corner had been turned. More than 15 months on, Vesely has continued to struggle to rediscover his momentum.

Caruso Hasn’t Won Since Monte-Carlo

If Vesely’s form is bit of a worry for the Czech, then Caruso hasn’t done too much better either. In fact, since his second round appearance at Monte-Carlo Masters, Caruso has won nothing on the men’s tour and that forced him to feature on the Challenger circuit last week.

Following his first round exit at Wimbledon, which was his eighth successive defeat – one of them having come at the hands of Vesely – Caruso jumped over to feature at the Perugia Challenger on clay in the lead-up to this tournament.

The good news is Caruso finally made it to the semifinal, breaking his bad form rut.

The not so good news is those three wins before he went out, came against players against whom he started out as a favourite anyway despite his poor run of form.

What Caruso would now like is to add to his four main draw wins on the ATP circuit he has had this year. He has a perfect opponent to do that again given his results but can he overturn the 0-2 head to head record against Vesely?

Vesely v Caruso Prediction and Tip

Things haven’t been great for either player and while Vesely’s head to head against Caruso gives him the edge, it must also be quickly added Caruso is a better played on clay. Tough match here, which could go to a third set.
