Sandgren Struggling With Form

Tennys Sandgren hasn’t been in best of forms in 2021 and the two-time Australian Open quarterfinalist comes to Newport with a 5-10 record this year.

He was 2-4 on the hard courts and then won just one of his eight matches on clay, which included four qualifying round defeats. He is 2-2 on grass, having played in Mallorca and Wimbledon and will look to notch a few more wins in Newport to sign off from the grass courts on a positive note.

The 29-year-old right-hander had beaten Jaume Munar in the first round in Mallorca before falling to Casper Ruud in the next. He had made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019 but could only win one match at the All England Club this year, defeating Norbert Gombos in four, but falling to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

Among the other majors, Sandgren lost in the first rounds of both the Australian and French Opens. He had previously played his best tennis at the Melbourne major, reaching the last eight in 2018 and 2020.

This will be his third appearance at Newport. he was knocked out in the first round in 2017 but made it to the quarterfinals in 2019, defeating Denis Istomin and Adrian Mannarino, before losing to Alexander Bublik in the last eight.

Sandgren has played in two ATP finals, winning the title in auckland in 2019 and finishing runner-up in Houston in 2018.

Sousa’s only win this year came against Christopher O’Connell in the first round in Miami, when he defeated the Australian 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (8-10), 7-5.

A three-time champion from 10 ATP finals, the 32-year-old Portuguese won the title in Kuala Lumpur in 2013, Valencia in 2015 and Estoril in 2018. Since then he made a couple of semifinals in 2019, but has struggled to win matches over the last two years. He finished 2020, with a 1-9 record and hasn’t got going this year either.

Overall, Sousa, who reached a career-high ranking of 28 in 2016, has a 14-21 career record on grass.

Sandgren v Sousa Prediction and Tip

Both players have been in ordinary form this year and would be eager to get into some sort of  rhythm in Newport. However, Sandgren will have the advantage, he has previous experience of playing in Newport, has won more matches this year and is 2-2 on grass this season.
