Jaume Munar v Philipp Kohlschreiber Head to Head

69th-ranked Jaume Munar and 115th-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber have not played before this.

Munar’s Success Has Been On Clay

Jaume Munar had a broadly disappointing time on the grass, after suffering a pair of first-round exits in Mallorca and Wimbledon respectively. To compound his misery, he extended his winless record on the lawns to eight matches.

It is tough to imagine a top 100 player still seeking a first pro win on the grass-courts, but on the evidence of his style of play and his penchant for clay, perhaps it is easier to see why he holds this unwanted record.

Now that Munar has ticked off the Wimbledon baggage, the brief summer claycourt season across Europe should come as a welcome addition to his schedule.

The 24-year-old Spaniard has won five of his six ATP Challenger titles on the surface including the Antalya title at the end of January. He has also made huge strides at tour level this season in which he reached the finals in Marbella courtesy of wins over the likes of Fabio Fognini and Carlos Alcaraz.

He arrives in Hamburg having won one of his past five matches.

Kohlschreiber Earns Wild Card At Home Tournament

Making his 17th tournament appearance at the German Open, Philipp Kohlschreiber is undoubtedly the most decorated player not to have won the Hamburg title.

Kohlschreiber has made the semifinals at ATP 500 event twice in his 20-year playing career, losing both times to the eventual champion – the furthest he has ever been at the tournament.

The 37-year-old, who is in the twilight of his career, has lost in the first round in each of his last three tournament participations. And his draw this year has not been kinder, as Kohscreiber opens up against a claycourt specialist in the form of Jaume Munar.

Kohlschreiber may be on his last legs, but he demonstrated his competitive spirit during the grasscourt season. He reached the quarterfinals in Halle, losing to World No. 7 Andrey Rublev. And at Wimbledon, he pushed Denis Shapovalov to five sets in a first-round defeat.

The World No. 115 is 7-6 for the season and has lost his last two matches.

Munar v Kohlschreiber Prediction and Tip

Kohlschreiber has had his fair share of horror draws in each of the last three seasons in Hamburg. His last three first-round opponents are something like this: Basilashvili, Fucsovics, and Fognini. And it seems the mishap has happened again, as he gets another tough opener.
