Inconsistent Putintseva Will Hope for a Brisk Start

Top seed Yulia Putintseva comes to Budapest after having lost a tough three-setter to Andrea Petkovic in the second round of the German Open last week.

Putintseva, who won the title in Nurnberg in 2019 and finished runners-up in St. Petersburg and Guangzhou in 2017 and 2018 respectively, is a three-time major quarterfinalist, having reached that stage at the French Open in 2016 and 2018 and the U.S. Open last year.

This year, the World No. 42 made it to the third round of the Australian Open, before falling to Elina Svitolina in straight sets. She was knocked out of the first round at Roland Garros by Ons Jabeur, but made it to the second round at Wimbledon by beating Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets before being dumped out by Paula Badosa.

The Ukrainian, who reached a career-high ranking of 27 in 2017, has featured in two quarterfinals this year, falling to Danka Kovinic at the Charleston Open and to Magda Linette in Strasbourg.

Having not had the best of years so far, the 26-year-old will look to get some momentum early by making a quick start.
