Tamara Zidansek v Marina Melnikova Preview

It’s the 47th-ranked Zidansek who will look to get back to her deep runs at tournaments when she takes on the 183rd-ranked Russian Melnikova.

Zidansek, who had begun the season ranked 97th in the world, broke into the top 50 thanks to her run at French Open where she stunned Bianca Andreescu, Katerina Siniakova, Sorana Cirstea and Paula Badosa to reach the semifinal.

Since then, the Slovenian player hasn’t quite achieved the same success, losing first round at Wimbledon and second round at Hamburg, but that shouldn’t dent her confidence too much.

Because up against her is a player, who at 32 years of age, has a career-best rank of 170th in the world. With barely any main draw wins Melnikova’s only hope is she can dig deep into her performances on clay – which are better than on any other surface – but even that sounds difficult.

Zidansek v Melnikova Tip

Games Handicap Melnikova +6.5: 1/1 (bet365)

Zarina Diyas v Simona Waltert Preview

The 102nd-ranked Zarina Diyas will be up against Swiss wildcard and 243rd-ranked Simona Waltert in this opening round match at Lausanne on Monday. It’s the first time they will be facing off in a competitive encounter.

Diyas has hit bit of a rut in her form, losing three in a row including the Wimbledon opener, and even before that her wins in main draws of competitions this year have been few and far between.

A win over Venus Williams at Miami was one such showing, while she also made second round at French Open, defeating Heather Watson en route. Playing a 20-year-old who hasn’t ever seen the inside of the top 200 rankings shouldn’t be too difficult, especially one who has rarely played in main draws of WTA tournaments let alone win a match.

Waltert does have a good ITF rhythm going; she won her fifth career title on that circuit this season to go with three other semifinal appearances including one other runnerup trophy.

Can she put up some fight here?

Diyas v Waltert Tip

Diyas to win: 8/11 (bet365)

Fiona Ferro v Harmony Tan Preview

The 52nd-ranked Ferro will be up against world number 134 Harmony Tan in the opening round in Lausanne, in what will also be their fourth overall meeting. All three previous matches, however, came on the ITF circuit with Ferro winning each time including once on clay in Saint Malo.

It’s been a poor season for Ferro, who had shown a lot of promise last year. Ferro, who had doubled her WTA title win tally in 2020 with a victory in Palermo, is now on a five-match losing streak.

While some of those defeats have come against the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Jennifer Brady, Ferro would rue her losses to Sara Errani, Kristina Mladenovic and Vera Zvonareva.

And she will need to break this horrible momentum soon but up against her is Tan, who has shown a few signs of pushing up the rankings chart. While she didn’t qualify for Wimbledon, Tan had earlier made the semifinal at WTA Bogota and made most of her wild-card at French Open by winning her opener.

She will sense she is in with a chance here, given how Ferro has gone about her business but also because there has been a definite change in Tan’s body language as far as winning matches is concerned.

Ferro v Tan Tip

Tan to win: 2/1 (bet365)

Stefanie Voegele v Francesca di Lorenzo Preview

130th-ranked Voegele and the world number 167 di Lorenzo will be facing off for the first time in their careers and it comes in the first round in Lausanne.

Both players, interestingly, come into this encounter with not too much form under their belts. Voegele, for instance is on a four-match losing streak, while di Lorenzo has lost five in a row.

Which is why it’s tough to take a stance who’s worse off but for Voegele’s sheer experience, tipping her to scrape through here.

Voegele v di Lorenzo Tip

Voegele to win: 4/9 (bet365)
