Clay is his favourite surface and after a brief detour to feature at Wimbledon, where Musetti got a direct entry as a result of his performances on clay, he is back in business on dirt.
A first round loss at Wimbledon might not have been the best result but he was on his first ever match on grass and up against Hubert Hurkacz, the eventual semifinalist.
Just prior to that, Musetti had made it as far as the fourth round at French Open where he took Novak Djokovic to the fifth set before having to retire from the match because of injury. What he would like to do is continue from where he left off at Roland-Garros and kick-start the next set of clay court competitions with a pulverising win.
Having begun the season ranked 129th in the world, he has already broken into the top 60 this season. That kind of turnaround for a 19-year-old is refreshing to watch but the big question now is if he can sustain the same.

Laaksonen Won’t be a Pushover
Laaksonen is 10 years Musetti’s senior, been around for a while. He has never been better than 93rd in the world on the ATP charts either.
And yet, he could make things difficult for Musetti.
That’s to do with the kind of form the Swiss player has shown on clay this year. In more recent times especially, Laaksonen has managed to carve out wins that he would have thought improbable at the start of the season.
It was at French Open this year that Laaksonen finally made it to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. That had come on the back of the Swiss player having to qualify for the competition with three successive wins.
He followed that up with a a qualifying defeat at Wimbledon, a surface he has had no grip over all career, but then returned to clay to make it to the final at a Challenger tournament.
Things could get tight here as a result.
