Garin Knocks Out Martinez

World No. 18 Christian Garin began his Bastad campaign in style, defeating Spain’s Pedro Martinez 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 36 minutes.

The 25-year-old Chilean, who produced his best Grand Slam results this year, reaching the Round of 16 at the French Open and Wimbledon, won a total of 71% service points, saved three of four break points and converted four of six to reach an ATP quarterfinal for the fourth time this year.

Garin has, however, gone past the last eight stage only once this year, when he went all the way to claim his fifth ATP  title with a win over Facundo Bagnis in the Santiago final.

Garin’s only other quarterfinal appearances were in Estoril, were he reached the last eight without playing a match and then lost to Cam Norrie, and in Madrid, where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in the Round of 16.

Overall, Garin is 17-10 this year and will be keen on extending the gap between the wins and losses in the next match.

Coria needed two hours and nine minutes to beat the Italian 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Broken twice in the match, Coria converted five of nine break points to advance to a third quarterfinal finish. He won his quarterfinal match in Cordoba against Benoit Paire but fell to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the semifinal. His other quarterfinal appearance was in Belgrade. He had beaten Marko Topo and Pablo Cuevas en route but fell to Novak Djokovic in the last eight.

Coria had begun his Bastad campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over compatriot Francisco Cerundolo.

The 29-year-old, who is 11-12 this year, has featured in a number of Challenger events over the past two months, winning his second Challenger title in Prostejov and finishing runner-up in Milan and Salzburg.
