Garcia Eases Past Diyas

It’s been over two years since Garcia made it to the semifinal of a WTA event and she will be rather pleased to have reached that stage yet again after a season of struggles.

Having won just 13 of the 28 matches she had played coming into this competition, Garcia crashed through Zarina Diyas’ defences to make a rare appearance in the last four stage of a tournament. She won 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 40 minutes.

It was Diyas who drew first blood when she broke Garcia in the fourth game and raced off to a 4-1 and then 5-2 lead. From there on, however, it was all one-way traffic as Garcia won 11 of the next 13 games to seal the victory.

Garcia, who benefitted from a high first serve percentage of 75%, will take on the 20-year-old Burel.

Burel Wins Three in a Row

Never in her career before this had Burel ever won three WTA matches in a row before coming into this competition in Lausanne. Which is why when she sent out the match favourite Fiona Ferro in her quarterfinal, Burel had unlocked an achievement.

It was Ferro’s first WTA entry and she did that by winning 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes.

In a match which saw a huge number of breaking opportunities, it was Ferro who took the early advantage and a 4-2 lead. A string of breaks followed to bring things back on serve but when Ferro missed a set-point on Burel’s serve it signalled a big turnaround in fortunes.

From there on Burel held serve, broke her opponent and then held on again to win the set, before racing away to a 3-1 lead in the second. Burel, who had earlier won her second ITF title this year, managed to break again to seal the encounter and march into the semifinal for the first time.

Can she now go one better?
