Karolina Schmiedlova Has Met with Middling Results
Given her ranking of 126th in the world, not too much is probably expected out of Karolina Schmiedlova on the WTA circuit. The Slovak, however, has managed to win a few of her first round matches in competitions played in 2021.
Karolina Schmiedlova would be particularly proud of the manner in which she made the second round at both, Bastad and Budapest. At both competitions, played in the lead-up to this one, Karolina Schmiedlova was up against a bookmaker’s favourite in her opener.
At Bastad, especially, Karolina Schmiedlova was bagelled in the first set before coming back to beat Clara Burel and then route Irina Begu in the opener at Budapest last week.
That combined with the fact Karolina Schmiedlova did well on clay last year too, having gotten herself a third round berth at French Open and a plethora of wins in exhibition tournaments during the pandemic break. She would like to think she has a chance here.
