Having taken a break for a surgery earlier this season, Collins is slowly and steadily coming into her own. And that was on display last week when Collins moved into the semifinal at Hamburg with three successive wins before going down to Anhelina Kalinina.
What Collins would obviously know is those three victories came against players against whom she went in at 1/5 odds or shorter, implying the gulf in the pedigree of play between her and those players.
As soon as she faced her first real challenge, Collins found it difficult to reproduce that kind of showing. Making it worse was an injury to her arm in that match against Kalinina for which Collins needed some treatment before she decided to retire from that contest.
It doesn’t look like a very serious injury by the looks of things but one that could play at the back of her mind. Which is why while she takes on a player who has never been in the top-220 on the rankings, things might not be as easy.

Gerlach Loves Playing on Clay
23-year-old Gerlach has 11 ITF tournament finals under her belt of which she has won four. Each one of those 11 came on clay, pointing to the obvious.
Which is also why it’s not surprising Gerlach has played 24 of her 34 matches this season on clay. Last season it was 21 out of 29. And the one before that saw her play on clay in 56 of the 64 matches she participated in that season.
Gerlach has featured in three previous main draw matches on the WTA circuit and lost each and every time. Can she now take down a player who might not be fully fit but comes into this tournament as the top seed?
Collins v Gerlach Prediction and Tip
Collins is a favourite and it’s difficult to go against that but I would be surprised if Gerlach falls to an easy defeat. A games handicap sounds like a decent call below.
